Sustainability

Community

We aim to enhance corporate citizenship, governance and ethics through the following initiatives:

Corporate Governance

- Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)
The MSC is an independent non-profit organization that promotes sustainable fisheries by using an Eco-label to identify seafood products certified to its environmental standards. Blue Star is involved in collective efforts alongside other responsible crabmeat companies to earn MSC accreditation for Indonesian blue swimming crabmeat sustainable species stocks by 2011. Additionally, we are in the pre-assessment stages for MSC accreditation in the Philippines and in due diligences in four other countries.

- British Retail Consortium (BRC)
The BRC Global Standards are a suite of four industry-leading Technical Standards that specify requirements to be met by an organization to enable the production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and consumer products. Their Global Standard is recognized in the UK and around the globe as a benchmark for food standards. Blue Star brands are accredited by the BRC.

- NSF Cook and Thurber
NSF Cook & Thurber is the leading provider of comprehensive food safety services for the food, beverage, animal feed, and packaging industries. The NSF Cook & Thurber team is an experienced group of unique specialists, each with over 20 years of industry experience. This team is equipped to consult, perform audits and certify to the NSF Cook & Thurber guidelines. Blue Star is audited by NSF Cook & Thurber once a year achieving high or perfect scores at the source and in the USA.

- Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
The FDA is a regulatory agency in the United States responsible for ensuring the safety of an array of consumer products. HACCP is a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product. Blue Star is HACCP certified at the source and in the USA.

- Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) an EU requirement as of 1/1/2010
IUU fishing is a serious global problem, one of the main impediments to the achievement of sustainable world fisheries. Blue Star is in compliance in Vietnam regarding IUU. Additionally, we are positioning Indonesia to be in compliance by the 2nd Quarter 2010, with four other countries soon to follow.

Support and Partnerships

The NFI’s Crab Council provides a common voice for U.S. companies and suppliers committed to supporting and encouraging producers and exporters worldwide to advance sustainability efforts for the swimming crab.
